Freedom On-Demand Changes
Effective October 2, 2022
RideKC Freedom On-Demand is being affected by the industry-wide driver shortage. The service has been running with very long service hours and an extended service area since it was created in 2018 and expanded in 2019.
Freedom On-Demand volume is high and is affecting our ability to manage the service along with the Freedom paratransit service. Freedom On-Demand trips are negatively affecting regular RideKC Freedom trips, causing longer wait times. We are making changes to put more resources back into RideKC Freedom, while still offering a solution for those who need an on-demand option within the RideKC service area.
Service hours
Current: 24 hours a day, seven days a week
New: Weekdays, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Weekends and Holidays, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Service area
Current: The service area currently includes all of the RideKC Freedom paratransit area and some surrounding, as well as all of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties.
New: In Kansas, Wyandotte and Johnson Counties
In Missouri: Kansas City, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Independence, Martin City, Avondale, Riverside, Platte Woods, Ferrelview, Northmoor
Trip booking process
Current: Trips can be booked via mobile app, phone and by contacting a driver directly.
New: Trips can only be booked by mobile app and by contacting dispatch at 816-842-9070, press option 4. Riders can no longer book trips through direct calls to drivers.
Customers will have to show their RideKC Freedom ID card on each trip, or other “official” photo identification if taking a Freedom On-Demand subsidized trip.
For bus route information, contact the Regional Call Center at 816-221-0660, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. We offer translation assistance for trip information in more than 50 languages.
