Be Prepared For Severe Weather

Date:April 26, 2022
Effective:Mar 15, 2022

Spring in Kansas City brings the chance of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the region. During most storms, your travel on RideKC will not be affected.

However, Kansas City may experience severe storms or tornado warnings. In the most severe storms or during a tornado warning in the immediate area of your bus, the bus operator will give you directions about safety. RideKC may temporarily suspend service in all or part of our service area for the safety of customers and bus operators. The dispatch office will be in contact with bus operators during severe weather.

If the conditions are severe enough, the operator will tell customers to get off the bus and find a safe building to seek shelter.  If shelter is not available, it is recommended that customers lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area. Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

In the event of a tornado warning, please do not use bus shelters instead of finding shelter in a building.

RideKC will post updates about bus service during an emergency at and on Twitter, at Sign up for RideKC Notify to receive emergency messages about storm warnings via text, email or phone message. The Call Center may be unavailable in an emergency if KCATA employees are evacuated.

Regular transit service will resume as soon as the area is safe.
